今回はシドニー・シェルダンの『Bloodline』についてのレビューです。
一言でいうと、「いい感じのサスペンス」です。
自分で犯人・黒幕が誰かを推理しながら読み進めるのが好きな人にとっては、かなりおすすめできる内容かと思いました。

『Bloodline』の概要
The daughter of a rich and powerful father, Elizabeth Roffe is young, beautiful – and sole heir to a billion dollar fortune.
Then tragedy strikes. Her father is killed in a freak accident and Elizabeth must take command of his mighty global empire, the pharmaceutical company Roffe and Sons. It makes Elizabeth the richest girl in the world. But someone, somewhere, is determined that she must die.
From the backstreets of Istanbul to the upmarket offices of New York, Bloodline is a hypnotic tale of love and ambition, danger, intrigue and death.
Roffe and Sonsという大企業一族を巡るストーリーです。
Elizabeth Roffeの父Samが不運な事故で亡くなった後、Roffe and Sonsの運命はElizabethに委ねられます。
会社の重役に就く彼女の従兄弟達は企業の状況の鑑み、それまでの一族経営から脱却し会社の市場への公開を強く求めますが、Elizabethは頑なに拒みます。
そして、Elizabethの周りには不可解な事故が起こり、彼女自身も身の危険に晒されることになります。
従兄弟達それぞれに動機は伺うことができますが、事件の背景に誰がいるのかはなかなか掴むことができません。
最後には意外な人物が犯人として姿を現します。
『Bloodline』の英語多読おすすめ度
サスペンスとしては文句のないハラハラ度なので、その手の作品が好きな方にはおすすめです。
英語の分量としては多くなく、難解な表現・単語も少ないので、英語小説多読デビューの方でも挫折せずにチャレンジできるかと思います。
私は1日10ページずつ読み進め、1ヶ月ちょっとで読み終わりました。
欲を言えば、前半で登場人物それぞれのバックグラウンドが丁寧に描写されていたので、個人的には逆にもう少しそれぞれの結末を描いて欲しかったです。
「あれ、あの人最後どうなったんだろう」的な疑問が浮かんできました。
もう一押し最後に加えてもらっていればさらに良かったという感想です。
ただ面白かったことには変わらず、ハッピーエンドで終わったこともGoodでした。

He met regularly with his partner. ‘It’s going to be even better than I thought,’ René told Charles.
‘Prices for wine are sky-rocketing. We should get three hundred thousand francs a tonneau for the first pressings.’
sky-rocketは「（価格などが）急騰する」という意味で、結構よく使われるのを見ます。
文字通りロケットが空に向かって打ち上がるのようなイメージです。
Alec kept telling himself that when Vivian had a child, she would settle down and change.
But one day, somehow – and Alec could not bear to know how – she picked up a vaginal infection and had to have a hysterectomy.
Alec had longed for a son. The news had shattered him, but Vivian was unperturbed.
unperturbedで「動揺しない」「かき乱されない」という意味です。
When Tod Michael’s hoodlums first began to press him for the money, Alec had threatened to go to the police commissioner.
‘I have connections in the highest quarters,’ Alec had said.
hoodlumは「やくざ」「チンピラ」「暴力団員」を意味します。
‘Of course I know how to give a party.’
‘Good. I’ve invited a group from Saudi Arabia. There’ll be about –’ He turned to Rhys.
Rhys smiled at Elizabeth and said, ‘Forty. Give or take a few.’
‘Leave everything to me,’ Elizabeth said confidently.
The dinner was a complete fiasco.
fiascoは「大失敗」「大失敗」です。
‘What do you want?’ Rhys asked.
‘I want to see you this afternoon.’
‘That’s impossible.’
‘Don’t make me cross, Rhys. Shall I come to Zurich or –?’
‘No, I can’t see you here.’ He hesitated. ‘I’ll come there.’
ここでのcrossは「怒っている」という意味で、割と強めの怒りを表します。
他にも怒りの表現はいくつもありますが、crossは比較的カジュアルな場面（親しい間柄）で使われることが多いようです。
まとめ
今回は『Bloodline』の書評でした。
特に専門的な用語も出てこず分量も多くないので、初心者が多読練習に取り組みやすい良い教材かと思います。
TOEICレベルで言えば600点くらいあれば挑戦できるはずなので、興味のある方は是非チャレンジしてみてください。
